This week the World Health Organization released its first country by country look at environmental health risks. This include pollution, dangers in the work place and ultraviolet radiation from the sun. They also include risks like noise, unsafe agricultural methods, climate change and people's behavior.

The report says:" making Environmental Condition's Health Year could prevent 13 million death each year". Research on close to 200 countries found that the worest affected include Angola, B*, Marla and Afghanistan. The study found that two major environmental risks calls more than 10% of the death in 23 countries. These risks are unsafe water and indoor air pollution from burning wood, coal or animal waste for fuel. Four countries suffered the most from the environmental health risks. "They loose about 20 times more health years of life per-person per year than wealth countries" the WHO says. But it says even countries with better environmental conditions could still reduce disease rates by almost 1/6.

In some poor countries environmental improvements would cut disease rates by more than 1/3. The main victims of environmentally related diseases are children under age 5. For example, the report says:" They will present 3/4 of the death from diarial and long infections". WHO officals SM says " The study is the first step to a helping national decision makers to set doors for preventive action". But the finding show there is a lot individuals could do to reduce death rates. Among suggestions given are using cleaner fuels like gas or electricity as well as using better cooking devices. Improving air flow and keeping children away from smoke would also prevent many long infections. And lives could be saved with health water treatment and save storage. The country profiles of environmental burten of disease can be found online at who.int or click on the direct link at our website voaspecialenglish.com.

Palestinian factional fighting in the Gaza Strip appeared to end on Friday as Hamas Islamic militants completed their takeover of Fatah facilities. More than 100 people, mostly militants, died in nearly a week of violence between the two factions. VOA's Jim Teeple reports from Jerusalem, Hamas leaders say they will ignore decrees from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who declared a state of emergency late Thursday and dismissed the three-month-old Palestinian unity government

For the first time in nearly a week, calm appeared to return to the streets of Gaza, as Hamas militants completed their takeover of the territory by seizing the Gaza headquarters of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Ismail Haniyeh, who Mr. Abbas has dismissed as prime minister, says he will ignore the order and focus on restoring security. Haniyeh says he has instructed the Hamas Executive Force militia to impose what he described as "quiet" in Gaza. Haniyeh says the existing government will continue to operate no matter what President Abbas says. With the Hamas takeover of Gaza, the Palestinian territories are now effectively divided between Hamas and Fatah. Israeli officials say they have no intention of entering Gaza to confront Hamas, but that the Hamas takeover of Gaza will hurt chances to revive the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Jim Teeple, VOA News, Jerusalem.

An al-Qaida-linked group in Iraq says it has killed 14 Iraqi soldiers and police after a deadline expired. The group posted a video on the Internet Thursday showing a masked insurgent shooting the Iraqis in the head. It said Monday it was holding the 14 Iraqis, and it threatened to kill them within 72 hours unless the government released Sunni Muslim prisoners.

Indonesian police say they have arrested the leader of the Southeast Asian terrorist network, Jemaah Islamiyah. VOA's Heda Bayron has more from our Asia News Center in Hong Kong.

The police identified the man as Zarkasih, and they say he is the overall head of Jemaah Islamiyah. They told reporters that he was arrested last Saturday in Yogjakarta, central Java. On the same day they arrested the leader of JI's military wing, Abu Dujana. In a videotaped confession, Zarkasih, who was previously known only to terrorism experts, says he took over in 2005. John Harrison, a terrorism expert at the Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore, says Zarkasih's name has been on the "fringes". "His name has sort of recently emerged but it isn't that much on the public domain yet. It's not totally surprising, because JI has not always been noted for announcing who their leadership is." JI is responsible for several terrorist bombings, including the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people. Another JI militant, Noordin Top, is still at large. Heda Bayron, VOA News, Hong Kong.

Thai police say at least 7 soldiers have been killed by a roadside bomb in the country's restive south. Authorities say the soldiers were on patrol in Yala Province today when a bomb exploded near their vehicle. It's one of three mainly Muslim provinces in southern Thailand at the center of an anti-government insurgency. Near-daily shootings, bombings and arsen attacks have killed around 2,200 people since 2004. Authorities say much of the unrest has been instigated by Islamist separatists. Crap local officials and criminals also have been blamed for some of the violence.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard is to meet Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama today, despite China's objections. On Thursday, the Dalai Lama had an unplanned conversation with New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark, who New Zealand officials say he met by chance at an airport in Australia. He also met with Australia's opposition leader earlier in the week. The Nobel Peace Prize winner's 11-day visit to Australia has drawn criticism from Beijing, which regards the 71-year-old Buddhist leader as a separatist.
