This is AP News Minute.

As it moved out, tropical storm Noel triggered mudslides and floods in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The death toll rose to 60 Wednesday, making it the second deadliest Atlantic storm this season. The killer storm is now heading toward Bahamas and bringing rough surf to Florida.

Officials say one of last week's devastating southern California wildfires was accidently started by a boy playing with matches. That fire destroyed 38,000 acres and 21 homes. It's not immediately clear if he'll be arrested or cited.

The accused ringleader of the 2004 Madrid train bombings has been acquited. The three lead defendants were found guilty of mass murder and other charges. 191 people were killed. 1,800 others were hurt in the blast.

It was a record night for a world Kansas football team. Smith Center High School scored 72 points in the first quarter of Tuesday night's game. The end, defeated team went on to win 83 to nothing. It's believed to be a record for points scored in a quarter by a high school team.

VOA Special

This is the VOA Special English Education Report.

No two college radio stations sound alike:

...

Some stations have a low-budget sound and students do all the work. Others like WBRU at Brown University Rhode Island have a professional operation heard throughout their communities. College stations play all kinds of music from jazz to hot rock. Many also have news including national or international programming. More than three hundred college radio and television stations belong to a group called "Collegiate Broadcasters Incorporated".

CBI helps organize a national college media conference which this year took place in Washington. Hundreds of students, professors, and media professionals were at the four-day event last week. Warren K. at the state university of New York Brockport is chairman of CBI. He points to WBRU as an example of a commercial station meaning it earns money by selling time to advertisers.

The station is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission which  polices the public airways. For example, the station could be fined if it broadcast offensive language. Many colleges and universities operate stations that also licensed by the F.C.C. but do not sell advertising. They raise money other ways including donations from listeners. Stations like these including KTRU at Rice University in Houston are known as public broadcasters.

....

College radio stations may receive money from the student government or their school administration. Warren K.  says a majority have small budgets of less than fifty thousand dollars a year. Some stations do not broadcast over the public airways, so they do not have to follow F.C.C. rules. They stream their programming over the Internet or are heard through cable systems. Or they use low power transmitters heard only on school grounds. Still, many of their adult advisers want the young broadcasters to act professional.

And that's the VOA Special English Education Report, written by Jill Moss. I'm Steve Ember.

功夫片岁月-17

The Art of Action-17

The martial arts are also the essence of love, you know, and the nurturing motherly protection of love that love should have.

The filmmaker that directed and made it, An Lee, brought a sensitivity of character development in the story and that the way he shot it. The most memorable thing (is) for me is when Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh are having a conversation. She's sitting. He's standing in this kind of cement (almost) building and in the backdrop of this, you know, this huge window. It's a beautiful green scenery of mainland China in the backdrop, and you realize that. And you know the confinement they are in because they can't consummate their relationship. Just outside is the beauty of nature. Everything is available to them, but yet they can't go beyond. They're closed in. And I thought, wow, you know, and that's a real filmmaker and storyteller's sensibility.

The first question he asked me is "do you mind being a bad guy?" Because I've never been a bad guy. That's my first time but of course not the last time. Because I think maybe in personal I'm very kind, very sweet. So nobody think I could be a bad guy. But he is the first one. But I said, "It's okay. I don't mind. As long as you think I can do it, then I can do it.

The ending, of course, when the girl flies down, I just thought I want to make a movie that's just targeted toward that image.

Throughout this story, many of these martial arts pioneers and innovators have acknowledged the influence of American films on their styles, from the tender Wizard of Oz to the bloody Bonnie and Clyde. But elements of martial arts have appeared in American films that were definitely not martial arts stories.

Frank Sinatra strutted his stuff seriously in the early 1960s in Manchurian Candidate. And Peter Sellers highlighted his training techniques in the Pink Panther film series. And it continues on to current successes like Charlie's Angels, and even the animation favorite Shrek.

After Bruce Lee's influence in the 1970s, Hollywood embraced martial arts as a central component in its storylines. And it continues today.
