Agricultural Report

This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report.

For more than half of century, many farmers worldwide have added nitrogen fertilizer to their soil. They do this to increase the supply of organic carbon for a long term health of the soil. But four scientists from the Universtiy of Iillinois say too much synthetic nitrogen may instead reduce the organic carbon.

Their reported their findings in the current Journal of Environment Quality. The team led by S.H. studied soil taken from the morro plants. They experimental farm fields near the Unitersity of Iillinois has been used for more than one hundred years. The researchers studied one area where corn is continuously growing. They compared with another area where corn is planted in turn with oats and hay. Over the period of more than fifty years, the area where only corn was grown got more chemical nitrogen fertilizer than the other area. But production in the coutinuous with corn area was twenty percent lower compared to the other area. And scientists found that both areas had reduced levels of organic carbon.

The researchers also studied a few reports from around the world. They say they kept finding evidence of organic carbon reductions for syntheticly fertilizer to soils. Team member Richard M. says organic carbon is extremely important or healthy the soil. For example, it helps provide air for root growth and increases the soils' ability to store water.

Farmers traditionally made nitrigon with animal waster. They also would plant corn one season and crop like alfalfa for next season. But many farmers changed their growing methods when synthetic nitrogen became widely available in the 1950s. Before then, the chemical had been used mostly for weapon's production for the Two World Wars. Corn production and profits rose, but the researchers say overfertilization often result it, because farmers underestimated the amount of nitrogen already in the soil. Too much fertilization reduces profits and is bad for the environment.

They scientists say they do not question the importance of nitrogen fertilizers for crop production. "What their research shows," they say,"is the importance of testing the soil before adding them.

S.H. and Richard M. have created what they call the Illinoise soil nitrogen test. Some agriculture experts have praised it. Others though have questioned its effectiveness.

And that's the VOA Special English Agriculture Report. This report was written by Jerilyn Waston.

【影评快递】荒野生存

Movie Minutes: Into The Wild 荒野生存

Video download

Mp3 download

Into The Wild was written and directed by Shown Penns. It's an adaptation of by the Jon Krakauer book by same name that tells a story of Christopher Mccandless, a young man, who in the early 1990s after he graduated from college, set off on a long, two-years, zigzagging voyage across the country and ended up in Alaska where he died apparently from starvation in August of 1992.

As played by Emile Hirsch, Mccandless is definitely one of these seekers after truth, but he's also shown to be a very appealing, friendly, outgoing, open-hearted young man.

He's alreally fleeing from human contact, but as a quote from Byron that Shown Penns plays at the beginning of the movie , says he loves not nonetheless, but nature more. And one of the ways at these love-natures communicated really affectively in the movie is through the images. I can't really think of another feature film I have seen in a very long time that embraces the American landscape with such ardor and enthusiasm. The rhythm of the movie really depends on the other characters. It would just be a kind of a travelogue or romantic avocation at nature if it didn't have its very particular individuals in it. One of most memory boys Bon who plays this crazy wild man comebine driver and grain dealer in South Dakota. Caffetina is just terrific as women she is sort of also adaptive and howerhob gets a retired man who lost his own family who also take Criss under his wing. At these relationships are as important to the moives, as the main characters search for solitude in his encounter with nature.

What's wonderful that into the wild is has a real lightness and spirit real exuberance a feelling of fresh air and sunshine and wildness.

Health Report

This is the VOA Special English Health Report.

Today is World Diabetes Day. Part of a campaign to urge governments to do more to fight the disease. Organizers won of diabetes epidemic effecting two hundred forty-six million people worldwide.

Last December, the United Nations passed a resolution to observe World Diabetes Day every November fourteenth. The International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization began the event in nineteen ninety-one. The federation is an alliance of diabetes groups. It also has partnerships with drug companies.

People with diabetes have too much glucose or sugar in their blood. The body changes food into glucose for energy with the help of insulin or hormone. In diabetics the body produces little or no insulin or has trouble using the insulin that is produced.

As a result, too much glucose remains in the blood instead of entering cells. Over time the disease can cause blindness, kidney disease and nerve damage. It also can lead to strokes and heart disease.

People with type one diabetes need insulin injections. Many with type two do not. Instead it can be controlled through diet, exercise and treatment. And people may be able to prevent it.

This year's World Diabetes Day campaign is about children and adolescence. One of the organizers is Doctor Francis.C She traveled around the world for a film called "Diabetes, A Global Epidemic".The Discovery Health Channel will show it on Sunday.
.

Type two diabetes used to appear mostly in adults. But now, more and more children have it. Doctor / says it is spreading as more people rise out of poverty in developing countries. For example, India.

"There are all the cares all day long on the bed. Satellite dishes outside the houses. They are eating more food and more west/ food and getting over weight and developing diabetes.

She says another place where diabetes is spreading is South Africa.

"We went to touch with / people who overweight there is a lot of more food available than has been in the past. And people are getting on buses and going to offices in not necessary being as physically active had been in the past."

Doctor / says solutions must be developed country by country, and patient by patient. In Brazil, for example, a health clinic holds dances to get diabetes patients more active. Doctor / says the message of World Diabetes Day is that the disease is manageable, and in the case of type two diabetes preventable.

And that's the VOA Special English Health Report. I'm Barbara Klein.

寻找亚当-7

Search For Adam-7

Research on Jefferson's Y has already given us one huge surprise. It had long been suspected that Jefferson fathered children by his slave/ Sally Hemics. A 1998/ study used the Y chromosome to prove that it was almost certainly true. It showed that this white man apparently had black descendants. Now Wales believes he has discovered something about Jefferson that no one suspected. A discovery not about his descendants but about his ancestors, and it could take us a big step toward Adam. Wales noticed that Jefferson's Y chromosome mutations don't look european. So where did Jefferson's ancestors come from?

To find out the truth, Wales needs another DNA sample. The trail leads toward Virginia. One of the closest living relatives of the founding father lives in freze Virginia.

W: Now do you have any, any sense of your own ancestry and who you are descended from?
T:Thomas Jefferson.
W:Thomas Jefferson. How many generations from Jefferson..?

Oudin Jefferson shares the founding father's last name. He / also inherited his Y chromosome.

W:It's not gonna hurt, and you rub it on the inside of your cheek, really scrape away, up and down.

Everything about Jefferson points to him being european. Geneologists have traced his ancestry back to / mediaeval France and Britain. But the test revealed something you might never have imagined. Jefferson's Y chromosome links him not to Europe but to the Middle East what is now Lebanon and Syria. This is the best guess. A direct ancestor/ who lived in a land that no long exists called Furnitia. The Bible calls it Cana.

Jefferson may look european. But his Y chromosome tells a different story. It shows that what we look like may not really tell us where we come from. And it raises a question mark over the traditional image of Adam. For centuries artists have / depicted him like this, like a european. For many of us, this is Adam. Michelangelo's famous painting in the Vatican Sistine Chapel. He looks like a beautiful Italian who spends a lot of time in the gym. Did the common ancestor of all men really look like this? The story of Jefferson/ suggests he could have looked very different. But Jefferson can lead us much further back than his Furnitian ancestor. Jefferson has a particular mutation that he shares with / men from many different countries.
