美国总统电台演讲2007-11-24

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This week our Nation celebrated Thanksgiving. American families and friends gathered together to express gratitude for all that we have been given. We give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy. We give thanks for the loved ones who enrich our lives. And we give thanks for the many gifts that come from this prosperous land.

Thanksgiving is a time when we acknowledge that all of these things, and life itself, come not from the hand of man, but from Almighty God. Earlier this week, I visited Berkeley Plantation in Virginia. The story of this historic setting goes back nearly four centuries to another day of thanks. In 1619, a band of 38 settlers departed Bristol, England for Berkeley. At the end of their long voyage, the men reviewed their orders from home. The orders said, quote, "The day of our ship's arrival ... shall be yearly and perpetually kept holy as a day of Thanksgiving to Almighty God." In response, the men fell to their knees in prayer. And with this humble act of faith, the settlers celebrated their first Thanksgiving in the New World.

Berkeley's settlers remind us that giving thanks has been an American tradition from the beginning. At this time of year, we also remember the Pilgrims at Plymouth, who gave thanks after their first harvest in New England. We remember George Washington, who led his men in thanksgiving during the American Revolution. We remember Abraham Lincoln, who revived the Thanksgiving tradition in the midst of a terrible civil war.

Throughout our history, Americans have always taken time to give thanks for all those whose sacrifices protect and strengthen our Nation. We continue that tradition today -- and we give thanks for a new generation of patriots who are defending our liberty around the world. We are grateful to all our men and women in uniform who are spending this holiday weekend far from their families. We keep them in our thoughts and prayers. And we especially remember those who have given their lives in our Nation's defense.

One of these brave Americans was Lieutenant Michael Murphy. In June 2005, this officer gave his life in defense of his fellow Navy SEALs. Michael was conducting surveillance on a mountain ridge in Afghanistan, when his four-man SEAL team was surrounded by a much larger enemy force. Their only escape was down the side of the mountain. The SEALs launched a valiant counterattack while cascading from cliff to cliff. But as the enemy closed in, Michael recognized that the survival of his men depended on calling back to base for reinforcements.

With complete disregard for his own life, Michael Murphy moved into a clearing where he could get a signal. As he made the call, Michael fell under heavy fire. Though severely wounded, he said "thank you" before signing off, and returned to the fight. His heroism cost him his life -- and earned him our Nation's highest decoration for valor, the Medal of Honor. This weekend, we give thanks for the blessings of young Americans like Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who risk their own lives to keep us safe. We're also blessed by the many other Americans who serve a cause larger than themselves. Each day our Nation's police and firefighters and emergency responders and faith-based and community volunteers dedicate their time to serving others.

While we were enjoying our Thanksgiving turkeys, tens of thousands of these men and women were on the job -- keeping their fellow citizens safe and bringing hope and compassion to our brothers and sisters in need. And their sacrifice reminds us that the true strength of our Nation is the goodness and decency of our people. Since America's first Thanksgiving, we have changed in many ways. Our population has grown. Our people have prospered. And we have become a great beacon of hope and freedom for millions around the world. Despite these changes, the source of all our blessings remains the same. We are grateful to the Author of Life who blessed our Nation's first days, who strengthened America in times of trial and war, and who watches over us today.

Thank you for listening.

VOA Special

This is the VOA Special English Development Report.

A few degrees can make a big difference when it comes to food storage. Foods can go bad if they get too warm. But for many of the world's poor, finding a good way to keep food cool is difficult. Refrigerators are costly and they need electricity. Yet spoiled food not only creates health risks but also economic losses. Farmers lose money when they have to throw away products that they can not sell quickly.

But in 1995, a teacher in Northern Nigeria named Mohammed B.H. found a solution. He developed the pot-in-pot preservation cooling system. It uses two round containers made of clay. A smaller pot is placed inside a larger one. The space between the two pots is filled with wet sand. The inner pot can be filled with fruit, vegetables or drinks. A wet cloth covers the whole cooling system.

Food stored in the smaller pot is kept from spoiling through a simple evaporation process. Water in the sand between the two pots evaporates through the surface of the larger pot where drier outside air is moving. The evaporation process creates a drop in temperature of several degrees. This cools the inner pot and helps keep foods safe from harmful bacteria. Some foods can be kept fresh this way for several weeks.

People throughout Nigeria began using the invention and it became popular with farmers in other African countries. M.B. personally financed the first five thousand pot-in-pot systems for his own community and five villages nearby. In 2000, the Rolex Watch Company of Switzerland honored him with the Rolex Award for enterprise. This award recognizes people trying to develop projects aimed at improving human knowledge and well-being. A committee considers projects in science and medicine, technology, exploration and discovery, the environment and cultural history. Winners receive financial assistance to help develop and extend their projects. The award is given every two years. The next one will be given in 2008.

And that's the VOA Special English Development Report, written by Jill Moss. You can learn more about the Rolex Awards at rolexawards.com. And you can learn more about technology and the developing world at voaspcialenglish.com. I'm Steve Ember.

And I have never seen one little person affect the art community and people around the world as much as this little girl has done and continues to do.

My Kid Could Paint That is a new documentary directed by Amir Bar-Lev. It tells a story of a young girl from Binghampton New York, named Marla Olmstead, who by the time she was 4 was something of a celebrity in the art world and in the media.

On a * her parents hung some of her canvases up in a friend's coffee house after that she had gallery shows and before anyone knew it there was a story in the local paper and a story in the New York Times, then she was being interviewed along with her parents on every talk show in the nation. It seemed like that her paintings were fetching up to 10 or 20 thousand dollars each.

Mr. Bar-Lev explores Marla's story from a number of different angles, he starts out asking questions about the nature of art, what is a child's creativity, how does it compare to that of adults, why do we get so excited by the notion of a child prodigy and also whether our suspicions about abstract art that lead us to believe that our kids could paint something like that.

The story takes an interesting turn when a backlash with it has developed. There was a 60-minute report that suggested Marla's work was not necessarily her own, that she had been coached by her father Mark or maybe even that he had painted some of her pictures and passed them off as his own.

My Kid Could Paint That explores this mystery and Mr. Bar-Lev tries to figure out what really happens when Marla paints these pictures. In the end though the movie left me with a little bit of a queasy feeling, because it seemed that Mr. Bar-Lev was also exploiting the story. In coming into the Olmsteads’ lives to film this documentary he became part of the machinery that he is critical of. He acknowledges his role in it sometimes and expresses on camera, some doubts and ambivalence about whether he's also exploiting this child. But I don't get the feeling that acknowledging it in this way entirely lets him off the hook.

And I am left with very mixed feelings about this movie, I think it's an excellent documentary, I also feel like it's one that maybe should never has been made.
